There were sixteen games played today as the regular season is starting to wind down. Pittsford came from behind to beat host Corning 8-7 in the closest game of the day. Thomas took Irondequoit by two (12-10) and Gananda beat Mynderse 11-8.

Gananda used their game as a benefit to help support their former Head Coach Mike Pane in his battle against brain cancer. Aquinas continued their winning ways in a 5-3 win over Canisius and Waterloo won a non-league game against Batavia.

There were interesting games today and two of the more interesting were won by one goal. Thomas beat Fairport 12-11 and Penfield beat Penn Yan 9-8. Churchville-Chili defeated HFL 16-13 and Irondequoit defeated Brighton 10-7.

# 2553  Saturday: Geneva Takes Irondequoit 9-7

Geneva surprised many with their exciting 9-7 win over last year's Class B Champion, Irondequoit in a game played at Hobart College in Geneva today. The Eagles scored first and after Geneva came back for the tie Irondequoit went up again 2-1.

# 1285  All Greater Rochester 2017

The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle announced their 2017 All-Greater Rochester Lacrosse team today. The list features the top sixteen players and a number of honorable mentions were led by Canandaigua senior Attackman, Devin Andrews who was named "Player of the Year". Andrews, who was also a US Lacrosse All-American, scored 72 goals and 47 assists this year. The SportsFive Offensive Player of the Year plans to study and play at Stony Brook next year.

Section V lacrosse lost a team during the season (UPrep) to low numbers and injuries so the Section ended the season with thirty-six team. The session ended with 955 Varsity boys playing.

# 1252  2017 Section Five All-Americans Announced

The head Coaches of Section Five meet last week to listen to the presentations of thirty players who had been nominated for All-American and All-Academic awards. The awards, sponsored by US Lacrosse, identify some of the best players from each area around the country. Each of the thirty-six coaches in the section has a vote on each of the awards.

Aquinas took off in the second half and outscored Nichols 8-4 in the second half on their way to a 13-8 win over the Big Green.  In the first three quarters, both teams were back and forth and remained within two goals until the final minute of the third quarter.

In the second game at Aquinas, the Little Irish took on St. Francis (Section VI). The game was close for the first half and then Aquinas scored the first two goals of the third quarter and held the lead though the final twenty-four minutes. Senior attackmen Alex Bianchi (3g-2a) and Jonathan Olbrich (4g) led in scoring for Aquinas.

The Screaming Eagles came out strong against the Little Irish, but a more consistent four quarters gave Aquinas a win and a 2-1 record. Aquinas defeated Wayne 7-6 with the last two goals of the game.

Livonia took the game into overtime to defeat Aquinas 5-4. The Bulldogs got their sixth win in the past ten years over the Little Irish (20 wins). Holding Aquinas to only four goals is the strongest defensive performance in the records. Livonia used two, two-goal runs to secure the win. One was in the first and one was in the third. The Little Irish scored three goals in the second quarter. Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth quarter.

NOTES:  After losing to Canisius 8-3 in their second game of the season, Aquinas redeemed themselves tonight defeating the Crusaders 11-5. The win came on the outstanding play by sophomore goalie Tony Deleo. Deleo was 53% in their first contest with nine saves compared to 77% with 17 saves in tonight's contest. Deleo stepped up in the third quarter especially with 7 saves while holding the Crusaders scoreless.

Tschetter (2g-2a) finished with four points with Clemmons (2g-1) and Richards (3g) added three points each.

NOTES: Third seeded Aquinas defeated tenth seeded Newark 15-5. The Reds, who were previously the lowest seed currently in the tournament, kept the game close the first half before the Little Irish scored eight unanswered goals in the third and fourth quarters.

# 684  Penn Yan Wins 20th Sectional Championship

Penn Yan came out strong with a 9-0 start before defeating Aquinas 12-2. The Mustangs win gave them their 20th Section Five title. Midfielder Austin Fingar finished the game with 3g-2a and was named Class C All Tournament MVP. The attack from Penn Yan finished with 7g-2a between them and were all named to the All-Tournament Team, Sean Emerson, Craig Gerhardt and Tate Stewart.

The All Tournament Teams for 2015 were announced on Championship Wednesday. MVP for A, B and C were Jon Perotto (Pittsford), T.D. Ierlan (Victor) and Austin Fingar (Penn Yan). Players were selected on the basis of their performances in the Section Five Tournament games.

# 526  Aquinas Defeats Canisius

Aquinas scored the first two goals, and although the score was tied, the Little Irish never trailed in their 5-3 win over Canisius. After a 12-11 overtime win the first time the two teams played, they both came into tonight with high expectations. The first quarter was a hard fought defensive battle which had Aquinas taking 5 shots at goal and Canisius taking 4 shots. Senior Bryce Kelly had two saves shutting out the Crusaders. The quarter ended at 0-0.

# 439  2016 All-Section Five List Released

This is the sixth year for the Section Five All-Section Team. It is an effort by the Lacrosse Committee and the coaches of Section Five to identify some of the top players among the over 1,100 varsity players in the section this year. Nominations for the lists came from Head coaches, administrators and SportsFive personnel. This year 15 players were selected for the first team, 13 players for second team and this year, 12 players on the third team. Our six All Americans automatically make the first team. All players on this list must first be named to their first team All-League teams or be from Independent teams.
